And I used to be a busy fool – running about like a lunatic, trying to do everything at once, keeping all the plates spinning for all the different projects I was getting myself involved in.
And getting nowhere very fast!
So I developed a set of methods to bring clarity to my world, and to help me to get some traction in achieving the things that were really right for me.

OK, so who am I – why should you take any notice of me?
After a successful corporate career handling major corporate key accounts – people like B&Q and RS Components – I felt it was time to go out on my own. Like most new businesses, especially in consultancy, I had a bit of a slow start. I found myself saying “Yes” to pretty much anything that came along – and a lot of that wasn’t what I really wanted to do. So I wasn’t great at it, and I certainly didn’t enjoy it.
Then, one day at a brainstorming session a colleague was complaining that he had far too many possible opportunities, and not enough time to do them all. I realised that the analysis engine I’d been using for Key Account Management was designed to solve exactly that problem – prioritising which opportunity to focus on. So we repurposed the analysis tool, and came up with Opportunity Matrix™ – which helped him to see what to focus on.
Of course, the next candidate for the matrix was me – so I put all the things I was working on or considering into the tool, and promptly dropped at least half of them – they weren’t fun and they were never going to make me rich! So now I’m concentrating only on the opportunities that really light me up – Opportunity Matrix™ itself, the Key Account Management strategy tool it was developed from, a couple of fun key accounts clients, and a start-up with a lunatic that will be immense fun and should make as a bundle.
[EDIT] I’ve recently gone through the Opportunity Matrix again, this time with my coach, the fantastic (if somewhat brutal) Jules Cooper. And I’ve focused in even tighter – I’m dropping most of the Key Accounts stuff, and concentrating on the matrix and the startup – see the “IT just works …” page.
